The Jelly Bean Quilt

Have you ever started making a quilt....and then hated how it looked??
I did!

I had a fat eighth bundle of Barcelona. They looked like such fun colours...

Barcelona Fat Quarter Bundle

So I cut it all up..I used a tutorial called Alter Ego,  from Jenny at the Missouri Star Quilting Co. (I love those little videos) But when I laid it all out....I hated it!!  It looked like someone had thrown up jelly beans all over the floor! (sorry...but that is what I thought )  So I put it away on a shelf and left it for awhile. ....sort of like sending it to its room for a time out LOL

When I took it out again, I decided to try and selvage it, so I am adding some dark grey sashing to each block, and will add a little black border, which I think will  really tone it all down.

So I am much happier with this now...it is not finished yet, but at least it is back in my WIP list, and not banished to the corner! :)

  2. I've done that too, but seldom salvage it. The gray really ties it all together.

  3. I think it is that dark blue that throw the eye, but sashing it in a calming color is brilliant. Good for you in getting it back out.

  4. I know exactly how you feel--I'm glad that I'm not the only one who's had that problem!

  6. I think this is going to work out....you needed the neutral sashing. A lot of times when you get a stack from one pattern line, the palette is heavy on the medium values. You need the dark values, and lights to make it work and not just mush together.

  7. Oh my goodness!! You cracked me right up! Jellybean barf! Hahaha!!!
And I've had a few yucky quilts. I often give up on those and pass them on to a charity group who will work wonders. Good for you for staying with it!

  9. Yep, tried that too. The grey is just what the blocks needed to really shine. So funny, I was looking at your picture and thinking I rather liked it... And only later discovered that you had the grey in and the blocks were separated a bit. I can imagine it was not good before.

  10. Way to stick with it. I think a quilt you don't love is an excellent opportunity to be a gift ;-)

  11. I think your addition of dark grey was a great solution! It has a very modern look now.

  13. It doesn't look horrible, or vomit, or anything that bad! They are not my favourite colours, by I do think they are great colours for a boy/man quilt. I think Zen Chic's fabrics are very versatile for this reason. So many fabric designers are really female oriented.
