where have I been?

Good question! The short answer is that I just haven't felt like talking to anybody!
I have had a few curve balls in life the past few weeks, besides my daughters apartment being totally destroyed by the flood in Calgary... and have just been kind of unmotivated.
Do you ever feel that way??

I guess that is life :)

Update on my daughter's apartment in Calgary...

that is what is left of the inside !! I guess the good news is that they will hopefully start to rebuild soon. She is still looking for a place to live for the next few months, as most rentals are asking for a 1 year lease! We are very lucky that some good friends have offered to let them stay in their basement for the time being, and it is only temporary...I keep telling her :)

So to try to get myself moving again, I have signed up for Melissa's Star Surround QAL!! Over at Happy Quilting.  I really love her blog, and this looked like fun..even though I am normally not inclined to stars..I really liked the look of this one.  And I have never joined a QAL before, so we will see how this goes. This is her sample:

So....I have pulled out some of my favourite fabric...it is old, I have been saving it!! It is Moda's "Origins" by Basic Grey.

Here is my "homework" for this week....cutting up all the little squares...

Of course I didn't take a picture of the 4 1/2" squares .....mmmm...the pattern doesn't actually call for those...I guess  I should have cut them to 5 1/2"!! Lucky for me, I had enough left over to cut them the correct size!! LOL

I have to admit, brown is just not my colour, and I probably have rarely used it before. But....I made the mistake of giving my family (DH, Son, and DIL) a vote of several different colour combinations...and they voted brown!! So brown it is!!  We will see how this turns out. My DIL said that if I don't like it I can always give it away!! Good plan. :)

Stay tuned!

  2. What a pretty pattern. That looks like something I would like, but I have my swoon pattern with my fabric pull for that sitting and waiting for me. So I think I'd best stick with one "big job" for now.

  3. Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about those curve balls, Fl.! :( I hope things turn around soon. Hugs!

I like that palette you chose for the QAL -- it'll work beautifully. I know what you mean about brown -- my least favourite colour too.

  4. Your fabrics for the QAL are going to look so wonderful! Can't wait to see the first few blocks ;) And even though your daughter's apartment is down to its bones, at least that's progress and things can keep moving forward. Hope the curveballs have stopped for you or that you're getting better at knocking them out of the park. Glad to see you back on your blog too.

  6. That kind of devistation takes a long time to overcome from - we are over 2 yrs. from Irene and people are still reeling. Breathers are good, so no apologies - and it is with family in mind. Your fabric choice is just lovely and I am sure once you start to see some of those stars, you will change your mind about the brown.

  7. The thing I like best about Basic Grey lines is that even when I don't like the individual fabrics, they always look pretty much spectacular when you put them together. I think the brown will just fit right in once you start putting it all together. (I love brown though, so I don't really understand the aversion so many people have! It's chocolate! It's tree trunks! It's fresh turned dirt! Anyway... :D)

  8. I love brown too. I have made some quilts using that colour combination and they have been some of my favourites. I hope your daughter will find a good place to stay and things will be better for you soon.

  9. I can see why you like this star pattern, that's a beautiful block, as for the 4-1/2 inch squares, there will be something to use them with, I'm sure... Too bad about your daughters apt! I guess I've been out of the loop too.
