buttonhole paranoia

I know some people are intimidated by putting in zippers....Me?  not a problem!
Setting in sleeves?   A walk in the park!
But....

buttonholes??  They strike fear into my heart!!
My trusty Jenny (Janome machine) has an automatic button hole maker. That should make it easy...right???

You put the button into the gadget, and presto.... it makes a buttonhole!

Only problem is....it doesn't always make it properly..

I am sure that this is Pilot error! And once I practice for awhile, I always get it going properly...but there is just enough of the element of surprise involved to keep my paranoia alive and well.  Having said that, it is a great feature and once I relax...it produces perfect button holes almost every time!

But now I am going to go check out what more creative (and less paranoid) people are up to over at the Needle and Thread Network !

  1. hi flo! longtime reader - first comment!
make you a deal - you do my zippers, i'll do your buttonholes! can't stand doing zippers - always place them by hand...it's the only way i can get them right! but hand-picked zippers are a designer thing, right?
    that's my story - i'm sticking to it...heh heh!
cheers - and a merry christmas to you!

  3. I was going to say read the manual and practic - but think you have done that. Yes, the nap frabics play 'not-nicey' with some elements. Merry Christmas Flo.

  9. I know what you mean about buttonhole gadgets. Have you tried just doing it manually with the machine? First measure your buttons. Then decide on where you want the holes: spacing and direction. Put marks in pencil, making the marks about an eighth inch longer than the buttons. Then do a wide zigzag at one end at zero stitch length, change to a narrow zigzag and very short stitch length to go to the other end. Then do the whole thing again going the other way. Aline the narrow zigzags as close as possible without touching and do those straight too. That's how I do it because those gadgets are too much relearning each time and never quite succeeding for me.
